Cotati CA is located in the northern part of Sonoma County, 45 miles north of San Francisco. It is located in the 101 corridor between Rohnert Park and Petaluma. The population of Cotati was 7,265 at the 2010 census, making it the smallest incorporated community in Sonoma County. The city is home to several wineries and vineyards. Incorporated in 1969, Cotati is a quaint little community.

There are several highways and train stations in Cotati, as well as a few bus lines. There are many public and private bus services that go to nearby cities.

The town has a rich history. The towns of Rohnert Park and Penngrove were originally called Rancho Cotate. The Coast Miwok were the first inhabitants in the area. In the 1850s, Captain Juan Castenada of the Mexican military, who led a raid on California, named the town Rancho Cotate after a Coast Miwok village.
